Ed alzai le mani, in un istintivo gesto d'angoscia, come ad esprimere il senso di vuoto che mi desolava l'anima.Ma le mie parole non dicevano nulla di vero. E sentivo che quel vuoto non veniva dalla fine improvvisa che aveva cancellato lei, la donna bionda, e ch'era invece un vuoto più antico, a cui sarei giunto in ogni modo appena mi fossi trovato fuori dalla casa delle mie notti di febbre e di desiderio. Era il vuoto di ogni volta che avevo lasciato lei per tornare al mio vecchio mondo di ragazzo e che ogni volta avevo creduto di riempire correndo di nuovo a lei: il vuoto dell'amicizia perduta, e del bene che non avevo detto.
